Justinian The Great dissects a starfish.

Roberta, donning finger-less gloves -- the penultimate fashion statement of the hour -- is horrified that we dissect ANYTHING. The fact that she was expected to participate elicited a "Mooooommmmyyyy" and her mom came over and helped.

Anya was much more willing to dissect. Her poor four legged starfish. Anya learned that the starfish's stomach actually protrudes from its body to digest food. Cool and gross all at the same time.

Collin was a trooper. He did a great job dissecting his starfish. Good job Collin!
Our vocabulary has increased dramatically with the addition of Roberta to CC. Do you know what itchy bites, looooo and sweeties are? "She is HYSTERICAL" is usually what I hear after class when Ann Marie describes Miss Roberta. We feel very blessed to have her and her family.

Ann Marie tries to squeeze in teaching... between Stephen's wry sense of humor and Roberta's outbursts of hysterical South African phrases.

Making Goo

Douglas and the great glob of goo!

WEEK 1: Slime

Atom - basic unit of matter. Nucleus and electrons.
Molecule - 2 or more atoms bonding. Na = sodium atom + Cl = chloride atom = NaCl (salt).
Some atoms by themselves can be extremely dangerous (think of the hydrogen bomb) but when bonded can become safe/stable.
Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it goes through with chemical reactions.
When we mixed glue and water, there was only a physical change, a mixture. But when we add the borax/water solution, a chemical change occurs which permanently alters the molecular structure of the ingredients, making it more solid and pliable.

Challenge I!
